Art as a Unique Expression of Freedom
Vivid colour and form all contribute to the expression of deep emotions inspired by Souren’s imprisonment and torture, her escape and subsequent struggle to achieve freedom and safety.
Recurring images celebrating the power and dignity of the female form contrast with striking dark angry pieces, evolved from the denial of human dignity and femininity she experienced.
Souren’s work encompasses both strong watercolour paintings and distinctive oil colours. The artist frequently alludes to the fading shadows of the Persian heritage, in which her childhood and adolescence was rooted.
Souren’s art reveals a compelling journey of mind, body and spirit in her attempt to find peace and independence.
